We drove about 90 minutes northeast from San Jose and stopped for breakfast at one of those tour bus only places. By now it was raining quite hard so we couldn't see much. We then drove another hour to the boat launch....hard to describe! Apparently, there are many "lodges" and camps near the National Park which are only accessible by boat. There's this odd assortment of ancient water craft beached on the river bank ready to take tourists to their destination. We boarded our craft and cruised down river for about an hour before reaching the Evergreen Lodge, just in time for a late lunch.
By now its REALLY raining, and it would off and on all afternoon. After lunch and a brief rest, we met at the dock for a wildlife tour of the river and some tributaries. (Sam was feeling a bit under the weather so she passed on this one). It was very much like the river tour we had the other day. We had some good sightings: an adult and juvenile Tiger Striped Heron, a Cayman sitting on a log and monkeys cruising through the tree tops. Our guides have very sharp eyes! (Sam reports that while we were gone, she sat and the porch and watched moneys right there!)
By the time we returned to the lodge, we were soaked through and through. There is no way our clothes will dry in this 100% humidity! It continued to pour right up until it was time to make our way to dinner.
Although we only just got here, this lodge seems like a very cool place! "Rustic" is a good word; no A/C and no TV but they do have wi-fi! After dark the noises of the jungle are amazing! Both our lunch and dinner were excellent.
Tomorrow we start with a "walk" in the jungle with our guide, Julio, who is very knowledgeable.
We met some new people today - travelers from England, France, Denmark and Spain! We are amazed at how well-traveled all these people are!
