Monday - Tortuguero

The sun is shining this morning! Calm, warm, and very humid. Everything is wet! It did rain a bit over night and at about 3:30 we were all awakened by the screeching sounds of the Howler Monkey! Frightening if you don't know what it is.

After breakfast we went on a walk through the jungle with our guide, Julio. We didn't see any wildlife but we learned about the jungle, every living thing competing for sunlight! On returning from our walk we had enough time for a swim in the pool before lunch.

After lunch we boarded our water craft and went across the channel to visit the beach and the village  of Tortugueno.  Tortugueno is really a narrow island created by the river channel which runs parallel to the ocean. About 1600 people live here. The only industry is tourism. The beach area is a Green Turtle sanctuary, almost exactly like the one in Florida we visited with Linda Jump a few years ago.

There are no motor vehicles on the island, just bicycles. After walking the beach, we entered the village through the back of the elementary school. Lots of happy kids dressed in bright green t-shirts. The only street is lined with curio shops, cafes, tour guides and bars. A fun place to browse! Drinks with our English friends at the "Sunrise Breakfast Place".

Back to the boat and return to the hotel by 5:00. Rest and dinner then pack for our return to  tomorrow morning.
